Supreme Court to Review SJB’s Challenge Against  Postponement of LG Election for 4 Days!

The Supreme Court decided today (21) to finalize the fundamental rights petitions filed by parties and organizations including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, demanding that the local government elections, which have not been held at the scheduled time, be ordered to be held immediately before a full bench of judges for four days. News

The provincial government elections were scheduled to be held on March 09 last year, but the basic rights petitions that were filed stating that it has not been held yet have been postponed. He decided to complete the exam all day on such days as well.

Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya considered these petitions before the bench of Supreme Court judges Vijith Malalgoda, Gamini Amarasekara and Murdu Fernando.

These petitions were scheduled to be heard yesterday (21) in front of a full panel of judges, but the hearing of the petitions was postponed due to the absence of a specific composition of the panel of judges.

The Election Commission and its members have been named as respondents in these petitions filed by Samagi Jana Balavega General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, National Jana Balavega General Secretary Nihal Abeysinghe, National Jana Balavega Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and former MP Sunil Handunnetty.

The local government elections were scheduled to be held on March 09 last year, but the petitioners, who state that the basic rights of the people of the country have been violated by not holding the elections on the scheduled date, demand that orders be issued to hold the relevant elections immediately.

President’s Advocates Mr. Faiz Mustapha and Upul Jayasuriya appeared for the petitioners and Mr. Nerin Pulle, Additional Solicitor General President’s Advocate appeared for the respondents representing the Attorney General.
