Supreme Court Petition Challenges Constitutionality of MPs’ Pension Abolition Bill in Sri Lanka
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A petition has been filed with the Supreme Court seeking a ruling that several clauses in the government-submitted bill to abolish the pensions of Members of Parliament are unconstitutional, Sri Lanka Latest News reports.

Former parliamentarians M.M. Premasiri, Navaratne Banda B.M. Deepal Gunasekara, and Samansiri Herath have jointly filed one petition, while another petition has been submitted by former parliamentarians Piyasoma Upali and Upali Amarasiri.

In the petition, filed through Attorney-at-Law Sanath Wijewardene, the petitioners argue that certain provisions of the proposed bill violate fundamental human rights guaranteed by the country’s Constitution.

The petitioners have requested that the Supreme Court rule that, if the bill is to be passed, it must be approved by a special majority in Parliament and sanctioned through a national referendum.
