The Supreme Court today (13) directed the filing of charge sheets against the Controller of Immigration and Emigration, Mr. Harsha Ilukpitiya, on accusations of contempt of court. The charges stem from his failure to implement an interim order by the Supreme Court, which temporarily suspended the government’s newly introduced e-Visa system.
Additionally, the court instructed the petitioner to draft the charges and submit them for consideration by the court on the 25th of this month.
This ruling was made by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, consisting of Justices Prithi Padman Surasena, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, and Achala Vengappuli, during the hearing of fundamental rights petitions challenging the e-Visa system. The petitions were filed by Members of Parliament M.A. Sumanthiran, Patali Champika Ranawaka, and Rauf Hakeem, who presented their case through a motion today.
