Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa criticized the postponement of the election and stressed that the appointment of the Inspector General of Police is a serious issue. He argued that it is unethical for the Speaker to discuss this matter with the judges.
Premadasa urged the President, Prime Minister, Speaker, and Cabinet to implement the Supreme Court’s decision without undermining the country’s supreme law. He highlighted that the President cannot use his candidacy as an excuse to interfere with the appointment of the Inspector General of Police, as there is no such provision in the constitution. He asserted that the President has responsibilities that must be fulfilled and, if not, he will call for the resignation of the President to allow someone else to perform these duties.
Premadasa made these statements during an agricultural conference in Monaragala. He described the current governance as a vicious and destructive regime that is devastating farmers, impoverishing the populace, increasing malnutrition, and making various deals to prevent people from voting for him.
He claimed that the government is afraid of his potential victory because he would protect the 22 million people, recover stolen money, and hold those who bankrupted the country accountable. Premadasa also mentioned that during Hirunika Premachandra’s imprisonment, government representatives attempted various deals with her, but she refused to comply. He condemned ongoing monetary deals within the government, which he said are made to maintain power rather than benefit the people.
Premadasa emphasized the need for an ideal leader dedicated to the country’s development, calling for support across all party lines, religions, castes, and classes. He expressed his commitment to becoming the leader most devoted to the nation’s progress and stated that he would face arrest if necessary.
