Professionals in many fields are engaged in protests and symbolic strikes today (08) against the government’s new tax policy.

A rally has also been organized at Colombo’s Hyde Park this afternoon with the participation of the Government Medical Officers Association, port, petroleum, electricity, university professors and many other trade unions.

A 24-hour token strike is being implemented today in many government hospitals across the island, including the Colombo National Hospital, based on several issues including the government’s new tax policy and shortage of medicines.

This token strike, which started at 8 a.m. today, is scheduled to end at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

However, it is reported that this token strike will not be implemented at Colombo Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Castle Street Women’s Hospital and Maharagama Asthiya Hospital.

Meanwhile, the police have closed Colombo Fort Lotus Road.

Our reporter also said that government executive officers and Inland Revenue Department officials are holding a protest near Colombo Fort.
