The High Commission of India in Colombo marked a significant milestone by launching Sinhala translations of five Jataka Tales from Amar Chitra Katha comic books. The event took place on Navam Full Moon Poya Day at the revered Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya.
Published and translated by Amar Chitra Katha, India’s largest comic book publisher, these books aim to engage Dhamma students with the teachings of Buddha in an accessible and captivating format. The launch was met with enthusiasm, especially by the hundreds of Sunday school students in attendance.
In addition to the book launch, the High Commission hosted the second edition of the ‘Buddham Sharanam Gacchami’ mobile exhibition at Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya. Curated by the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the exhibition showcases paintings depicting key moments from Buddha’s life and Buddhist teachings. It will be displayed at Buddhist temples across Sri Lanka on each Poya day throughout the year.
The comic book launch and the exhibition underscore the High Commission of India’s ongoing commitment to promoting Buddhist values and shared cultural heritage. These initiatives further strengthen the historical and religious ties between India and Sri Lanka, fostering a deeper appreciation of Buddhist art and philosophy.
