In an address to party members gathered in Kurunegala, Johnston Fernando issued the following statement from Welikada Prison:
“Dear friends,
I recognize that none of you expected a letter like this for the 2024 election.
As in 2015, there are those who attempt to achieve political gains by targeting strong, influential figures with false accusations and leveraging state power to imprison or silence them. However, today’s circumstances differ slightly: the “Suttara Puncha” – who once acted from the shadows – now occupies the presidential seat.
The challenges I face today, while daunting, are no more than a speck of dust compared to the obstacles I have overcome throughout my political journey. It would be misguided to think that I – who have consistently stood up for the people and upheld my vision – could be subdued by imprisonment, even if it meant seeing the house my parents built reduced to ashes.
A handful of people, driven by hate and hypocrisy, may destroy structures. But, as long as I have the trust of people like you, they cannot bring down my spirit. I am here to prove that the patriotism forged by the love and trust of the people of Kurunegala will neither waver nor be subdued.
My thirty-year political journey has always been fortified by your unwavering support. The preferential votes I’ve consistently received in every election in the district are a testament to this strength.
From rural health centers in Kahapathwala and Dambadeniya to sports facilities, highways, and infrastructure improvements, your support is visible in each milestone achieved. From the light that now illuminates a house in the Vanni of Nikaweratiya to walking paths around the Kurunegala Tank, Badagamuwa, and the Batalagoda Reserve, the impact of your commitment is clear.
To my people, let it be known: I will continue to challenge the false accusations leveled by the opposition, armed with the power of truth. To my fellow party members, we remain ready to make any necessary sacrifices for the politics we believe in.
Tell them that our respect for Mahinda Rajapaksa, the leader who safeguarded this nation, remains undiminished. Tell them that Namal Rajapaksa and the Podujana Peramuna will stand strong, supported by our dedicated party members, come what may.
Your trust and hope are unwavering, and I remain committed to them until my last breath. I am still the Johnston you know.
Let us unite and give our all to secure victory, rise together, dispel falsehoods, and uphold the truth.
Victory awaits us.
Johnston Fernando
