SriLankan Airlines’ cargo division, SriLankan Cargo, has been awarded the CEIV (Center of Excellence for Independent Validators – Lithium Batteries) Certification by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

With this achievement, SriLankan Airlines joins the ranks of leading global airlines and service providers recognized for excellence in the transportation of lithium and sodium-ion batteries. Notably, it marks the first time an airline in the South Asian region has received this distinguished certification.

The CEIV Lithium Battery Certification was granted to SriLankan Cargo following a rigorous audit and validation process, which assessed the airline’s procedures for quality assurance and safety in handling battery shipments. The audit examined several critical areas including staff knowledge, training protocols, documentation practices, infrastructure, equipment, customer management, and overall operational efficiency.

The findings confirmed that SriLankan Cargo possesses the capabilities and systems necessary to safely store and transport lithium and sodium-ion batteries in accordance with international safety standards.

This certification is expected to further boost the confidence of international freight forwarding and logistics companies in SriLankan Cargo’s services. It will also help the airline strengthen its position in the global supply chain for batteries and battery-operated products, a sector where compliance with stringent standards and trust among stakeholders are essential.

Products covered under this category include a broad range of consumer goods such as mobile phones, laptops, electronic devices, remote controls, travel accessories, and toys.

The certification is also anticipated to contribute to increased revenue and operational efficiency for SriLankan Airlines, by improving the skills and training of SriLankan Cargo personnel and fostering new strategic partnerships. This, in turn, is likely to have a positive impact on Sri Lanka’s import and export sectors.

SriLankan Cargo currently provides air cargo services to diverse global regions including Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Far East, and Australia. Its direct service network spans more than 30 destinations in 21 countries, complemented by an extensive partnership network covering hundreds of other cities worldwide.

Additionally, through its collaborative partnerships and ground transportation capabilities, SriLankan Cargo is able to offer cargo delivery services beyond the destinations directly served by SriLankan Airlines, enhancing its global reach.
