SriLankan Airlines has incurred a loss of Rs. 280 million in lease payments for three aircraft that remained unused, according to a report issued by the National Audit Office.
The report highlights that the airline’s needs assessment determined a requirement for 27 aircraft to meet its operational demands. However, as of August 12 last year, the airline’s fleet comprised 22 aircraft, with only 18 operational at the time.
The audit findings reveal that three aircraft had been out of service from October 29, 2013, to August 2022, yet lease payments continued during this period, totaling Rs. 280 million.
Additionally, the National Audit Office report notes that SriLankan Airlines recorded an accumulated loss of Rs. 599.6 billion as of March 31, 2023.
This revelation adds to the challenges faced by the national carrier as it navigates a complex financial landscape.
