DIG Nihal Thalduwa, the Police Media Spokesperson, informed Mawrata that on the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), a special operation has been launched to investigate whether other vehicles—suspected of being illegally dismantled and smuggled into the country in containers—have ended up in the possession of politicians or wealthy business figures.
The IGP has also issued instructions to discreetly seek public assistance for this effort. The police encourage the public to provide confidential information about such illegal operations by calling the 1997 hotline.
In addition, a senior police official highlighted the need for an investigation at the customs level to determine whether these vehicles were brought into the country without the knowledge of customs authorities.
Interpol, in collaboration with the Sri Lankan CID, is continuing its investigation into the theft of a luxury BMW, valued in the millions, that was smuggled from England and recently retrieved by the CID. The vehicle was found in the possession of former Minister Johnston Fernando, whose connection to the matter has stirred significant public controversy.
