Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Disna Ratnasinghe, has announced that a five-minute census will be conducted on the 15th of this month to assess the population of monkeys, peacocks, and skunks, which have been causing significant damage to crops.
When questioned by Mawrata about the feasibility of counting these animals within such a short timeframe, Ratnasinghe explained that the census aims to provide a rough estimate. She compared the method to observing and counting the number of monkeys, peacocks, and skunks in one’s own garden within that period.
She further stated that the initiative will involve the assistance of Grama Niladharis, Samurdhi Niladharis, and Agricultural Research Officers to ensure broader coverage and accuracy.
Meanwhile, residents of affected areas, particularly in the Kandy and Kegalle districts, have expressed concerns over the severe impact these animals have had on agriculture. Reports indicate that the rising populations of these species, spreading at an alarming rate, are making it increasingly difficult to protect not only crops and coconut plantations but even household rice stocks.
Authorities have stated that once the census is completed, they will map the data and take further action accordingly.
