Sri Lanka Targets Inclusive Economic Growth with First Coordinated Recruitment Drive for Persons with Disabilities

Sri Lanka today marked one of its largest cross-sector pushes for disability-inclusive employment, as more than 100 jobseekers with disabilities connected directly with leading employers at Embracing Diversity – Skills and Work for Persons with Disabilities, held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7.

Organised by the GIZ Vocational Training in Sri Lanka (VTSL) project, with support from the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education and other development partners, the event brought together companies, government agencies, training institutions and civil society groups to strengthen pathways to skills and dignified work.

Addressing the inauguration, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewe, “Events like this are essential because they address one of Sri Lanka’s most persistent labour market gaps. Many persons with disabilities complete training, but their path to employment remains blocked by accessibility issues, and lack of employer exposure. Today’s platform creates a direct link between skills and real jobs.”

The event featured Sri Lanka’s first Disability Job Match Pavilion, where candidates submitted more than 100 CVs and met recruiters from hospitality, ICT, retail, manufacturing and services. Several companies began initial screening on-site, signalling strong employer interest.

An Economic Zone highlighted income-generating ventures led by persons with disabilities, with schools and community organisations showcasing craft items, food products and eco-friendly goods. On the other hand, the Creative Zone, curated by the Chitra Lane School for Special Children, presented performances and artwork by children and adults with disabilities.

Throughout the day, employers and training agencies discussed improving workplace accessibility and expanding inclusive recruitment pathways. Organisers noted that while progress has been made, significant gaps remain in employment access for persons with disabilities.

The event was implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
