Sri Lanka has been recognized as one of the countries with the lowest terrorist threat in the world, according to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025, which assesses the impact of global terrorism in 2024.

The Global Terrorism Index, published by the International Institute for Economics and Peace, ranks countries based on the impact of terrorism. The latest report analyzed terrorism trends across 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the world’s population.

According to the 2025 index, Burkina Faso has been ranked as the country with the highest terrorist risk, followed by Pakistan in second place and Syria in third.

In contrast, Sri Lanka has been ranked 100th, marking it as a country with one of the lowest terrorist risks. This is a significant improvement from its 36th position in 2023, as Sri Lanka has moved down 64 places, making it the most improved country in the South Asian region in terms of reducing terrorist threats.

Furthermore, the report highlights that Sri Lanka and Bhutan are the only countries in South Asia that have not reported any terrorist attacks in the last five years. It also indicates a continuous decline in terrorist threats in Sri Lanka since 2019.
