The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has ordered the Royal College, Colombo-7 to rectify the alleged wrongful appointments made to the student council for the year 2024. Sri Lanka Latest News
The Human Rights Commission has given this order according to 07 complaints filed by the students of the Royal College saying that their rights were violated by the appointment of student leaders for the year 2024.
Copies of the complaints have been sent to the Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the Minister of Education and the Presidential Commission of Inquiry citing the Human Rights Commission, the Principal of the Royal College, the Director of National Schools and the Minister of Education.
Commission Member Justice L.T.B. Dehideniya yesterday (March 15) investigated the initial complaints and examined the appointment criteria of two randomly selected student leader appointments and two rejected ones.
The Commission has observed the irregularities and failure of two persons appointed as Student Leaders of the Royal College to comply with the required criteria.
Also, the commission has revealed that two persons who were qualified to be appointed as student leaders have been rejected.
After the preliminary investigation, the Human Rights Commission directed the school representative appearing before the Commission to correct the wrong appointments and settle the matter regarding the complaints made by the students.
The commission has informed that if the school fails to settle the related issue, the parties including the principal will be called and a full investigation will be conducted.
