SJB MP S.M. Marikkar has warned that continued arrivals of substandard coal in Sri Lanka could lead to power cuts as early as March.
Speaking at a media briefing last week, MP Marikkar revealed that the coal from the first of three shipments already delivered to Sri Lanka has been confirmed as substandard.
He noted that reports on the quality of coal from the second and third ships are still pending. The MP emphasized that substandard coal is reducing the power generation capacity at the country’s power plants, forcing reliance on more expensive diesel-generated electricity.
MP Marikkar further highlighted that this situation carries a real risk of power cuts if the issue persists.
