Sri Lanka Extends Public Emergency Declaration Under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake

A Gazette notification declaring a state of public emergency in the country has been extended, according to Sri Lanka Latest News.

Reports state that the Gazette was issued under the directive of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with effect from January 28.

Taking into consideration the prevailing disaster situation, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of public emergency on November 28 last year, with the objective of ensuring public security, maintaining the normal functioning of the country, and safeguarding essential supplies and services necessary for public life.

Meanwhile, the government has also taken steps to amend the Emergency Regulations and Powers Order No. 01 of 2025.

It is reported that the relevant regulations declared on November 28 were amended under the instructions of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with effect from January 28. The corresponding Gazette notification has also been officially published.

Under the new Emergency Regulations, the government has moved to amend several previously existing regulations, while also introducing a number of new provisions.

The Emergency Regulations further clarify how public officials are required to act following the declaration of the state of emergency, as well as the actions to be taken against individuals who act in violation of these regulations.
