At the invitation of Greg Gianforte, Governor of the State of Montana, and Brigadier General Gibson, Assistant Adjutant General of the Montana National Guard, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States, Mahinda Samarasinghe, visited the State of Montana along with Minister (Commercial) Nalin Wijerathna and Defence Advisor Commodore Dumindu Abeywickrama. During the four-day visit, the delegation held extensive discussions with representatives of the Montana State Government, private industries, the Montana National Guard, the University of Montana, and Montana Technological University.

The purpose of the visit was to represent Sri Lanka as a reliable and strong bilateral partner of the United States, offering opportunities in trade and investment, education, and defence cooperation for mutual benefit.

The primary focus of the visit was on disaster preparedness and response, while also opening pathways for meaningful whole-of-society engagement and economic collaboration. Governor Greg Gianforte held discussions with the Ambassador for over an hour, highlighting the long-standing defence relationship between Sri Lanka and Montana. They also discussed the importance of unlocking economic and business opportunities in critical minerals and food security sectors, as well as disaster preparedness and mitigation. The Ambassador further emphasized Montana’s recent support in responding to Cyclone Dittwa, underscoring the already strong partnership between Sri Lanka and Montana in these areas.

The Sri Lankan delegation engaged in wide-ranging discussions with the Montana National Guard on mutually beneficial defence requirements, including maritime security, port security, port disaster preparedness, and disaster risk reduction. The delegation also met with the University of Montana to explore numerous academic opportunities aimed at strengthening disaster mitigation. The University of Montana is a nationally recognized institution with world-class expertise in areas such as flood management, wildfire predictive analysis, and monitoring disaster risks, as well as implementing effective measures to prevent disasters and promote a healthy ecosystem.

The Ambassador and his team also met with the Montana National Guard to discuss the State Partnership Program between the United States and Sri Lanka, along with further training opportunities for military and civilian officials in disaster mitigation, search and rescue, and maritime domain awareness. In addition, they met with Montana Technological University to discuss opportunities related to food security, mining safety, advanced extraction technologies, environmental mining safety, energy security, and other key economic and security prospects. The delegation also held discussions with senior officials of the Montana World Trade Center regarding opportunities for foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade between the two countries.

Subsequently, the Ambassador delivered a keynote address at a conference organized by the University of Montana, where he also participated in a Q&A session with university staff, students, and leading business representatives, discussing economic and investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador and his team further met with several leading private sector entrepreneurs in fields such as mining, maritime, environmental, engineering, food, water, and military aviation safety. The outcomes of these highly productive four-day discussions are expected to pave the way for significant future cooperation in trade, investment, and security between the United States and Sri Lanka, while further strengthening the already robust bilateral relations between the two nations.

The State Partnership Program of Montana and the Montana National Guard, in close coordination with the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, facilitated the four-day visit of the Ambassador and his delegation.

Montana is the fourth-largest state in the United States by area, with over one hundred mountain ranges in its western region. Its landscape is rich in natural and mineral resources. The state is a leading producer of coal and also generates oil, natural gas, wind, and hydroelectric power. Both natural resource extraction and agriculture together make a significant contribution to the national economy of the United States.
