Sri Lanka Borrows 3380 Billion in 5 Months Amidst Economic Challenges

Mr. Wasantha Athukorala, Senior Professor of Economics and Statistics Department of Peradeniya University told ‘Mawrata’ that the Central Bank reports reveal that between January and the end of May this year, the government has obtained loans of about 3,380 billion rupees from the domestic market. (Sri Lanka Latest News)

During the five months in question, about 3,085 billion rupees were borrowed from treasury bills and 795 billion rupees from treasury bonds.

In January, 878 billion rupees, 661 billion rupees in February, 843 billion rupees in March, and 720 billion and 779 billion rupees were taken as loans in April and May.

It is also revealed that the amount of local loans taken in an average month has exceeded 775 billion rupees, and the average amount of loans taken in a day is around 25 billion rupees.

It is also shown that the loan money thus obtained by the government is spent in a large way to repay the other loans taken so far.
