The removal of 124 unauthorized constructions and settlements encroaching upon the Sigiriya World Heritage Site has officially commenced, according to Minister of Cultural Affairs, Professor Hiniduma Sunil Senevi.

Speaking at a press conference held today at the Department of Government Information, the Minister emphasized that this action aligns with UNESCO standards for the preservation of World Heritage Sites.

Professor Senevi further noted that the Sigiriya Rock is suffering physical damage due to the overwhelming number of tourists, with visible signs of the rock breaking apart. He stated that the government is currently considering alternative measures to address the situation.

In a separate press briefing held today in Colombo, Director General of the Department of Archaeology, Professor D. Thusitha Mendis, clarified that although there is currently no risk of Sigiriya being delisted from the World Heritage List, the ongoing presence of unauthorized structures poses a serious threat to the site’s long-term preservation.
