The Sri Lanka Army has returned a seven-acre plot of land in Wattakachchi, where Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam leader Velupillai Prabhakaran conducted key discussions during the war.
The land, which belongs to the Department of Agriculture, includes several building complexes. One of these was the venue for a meeting held by Prabhakaran with journalists from Southern Sri Lanka in April 2002.
Located within an extensive mango grove, the same complex was also used by LTTE leaders to conduct special briefings for senior administrative officers in the Northern region. During these events, attendees were served colomban mangoes as dessert following meals.
After the Army captured Kilinochchi during the conflict, the premises were taken over by the military. Approximately 15 years later, the Army officially handed back the seven-acre property, along with its buildings, to the Department of Agriculture.
Prior to 2009, the land functioned as a training center for the Department of Agriculture, and it is expected that both the land and its facilities will continue to be used for the same purpose following their release.
