Mr. WGC Wickramaratne has announced the launch of a special audit to investigate the disappearance and misplacement of over 4,000 vehicles across various government institutions.

According to the Auditor General, a comprehensive report will be submitted to Parliament upon completion of the audit, which aims to cover all government bodies. The investigation also seeks to determine who had been using the missing vehicles.

The audit has revealed that 1,794 vehicles from the Ministry of Health are unaccounted for, including 679 cars and 1,115 motorcycles. Additionally, 212 vehicles from the Ministry of Education, 880 from the Department of Irrigation, and 45 from the Postal Department have been reported as missing or misplaced.

The National Audit Office has further uncovered irregularities in the issuance of 1,077 vehicle licenses, reportedly granted to national heroes.

The Auditor General emphasized that these findings are part of the ongoing audit investigation, and further details will be made available in the final report.
