SLPP Calls for Parliamentary Probe into NGOs Over Funding and Transparency Concerns

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has urged the appointment of a parliamentary select committee to investigate both registered and unregistered non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the country, raising concerns over their funding sources and transparency.

SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa made the request via a statement on social media, alleging that certain NGOs function without proper registration while receiving undisclosed foreign funds.

According to the statement, Rajapaksa submitted a letter to the Speaker yesterday, formally proposing the establishment of the committee. He affirmed that the SLPP would fully support the initiative if implemented.

The MP further asserted that while many of these organizations claim to be involved in post-war resettlement and poverty alleviation, their financial sources and actual activities remain unclear.

“But local media reports over the years have shown that some of these NGOs operate without registration and have provided no transparency regarding their funding sources,” he noted.

Rajapaksa emphasized the need for Sri Lanka to take such concerns seriously and initiate a thorough investigation to safeguard national stability.

“When the U.S. government has explicitly raised suspicions, Sri Lanka must heed these warnings and conduct an inquiry for the greater good and stability of the country,” he added.
