Member of Parliament Dr. Harsha De Silva highlighted the lack of transparency in the government’s debt restructuring process during a press conference at the opposition leader’s office in Colombo on the 17th. He expressed concerns regarding the ongoing discussions between the Sri Lankan government and bondholders, emphasizing the need for broader consensus beyond the current government’s tenure.

Dr. Harsha De Silva addressed the progress in negotiations, indicating that while discussions had concluded with the steering committee representing bondholders, a definitive agreement was yet to be reached. He underscored the significance of restructuring the nation’s debt, which amounted to approximately twelve and a half billion dollars, including outstanding payments.

Furthermore, Dr. Harsha De Silva cautioned against potential repercussions if an agreement was not reached, stressing the importance of international financial stability and adherence to repayment obligations. He criticized the notion of auditing loans post facto, citing the legal complexities involved and urging for a pragmatic approach to debt restructuring.

Additionally, MP Iran Wickramaratne echoed concerns about resource management and social welfare, emphasizing the equitable distribution of government resources for the benefit of the populace. He outlined proposals to maximize the utilization of national resources and enhance social security measures, particularly for vulnerable groups such as senior citizens.

Overall, both speakers advocated for responsible governance and strategic planning to address economic challenges and ensure the welfare of the Sri Lankan populace.
