The Western Province South District Crime Division says that four persons including the Chairman of the Matara District Cooperative Board and a Director of the Cooperative Insurance Company have been arrested in connection with the shooting and wounding of the vice president of the Battaramulla Cooperative Insurance Company at Gemunu Mawatha in Meigoda.
Police say that among the other arrested suspects are a businessman who owns buses, a soldier who left the army and a bus conductor.
The police say that the former vice president of the Cooperative Insurance Company who was injured by gunshots and a resident of Meegoda Walpita Thisara Uyana was named as the chairman on the 2nd by the consent of the board of directors and according to the judgment of the court.
It has been revealed in the police investigations that the former chairman was angry and a member of his team, the chairman of the Matara District Cooperative Board, had given the contract to shoot and kill Mr. Darshana Samarawickrama, who was going to take over as the current chairman.
For that, the suspect, who is a disciple of Matara Cooperative Board Chairman, told the businessman who owns buses in Kalutara Warakagoda area and it has been revealed in the police investigation that he committed the crime by contacting the other group.
Accordingly, the police say that even though they came to shoot the current chairman on several occasions, they missed all those occasions.
It has been revealed in police investigations that the ex-soldier came in a three-wheeler to shoot and after shooting from an ambush, he ran for about a kilometer and came to Highlevel Road on a motorcycle.
It has been revealed during the police investigations that the Matara District Cooperative Board Chairman provided the firearm and six bullets for the shooting.
The police also say that a special investigation is being conducted regarding how he got the firearm
