The Constitutional Council has approved the appointment of Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Priyantha Weerasuriya as the Acting Inspector General of Police.

The decision was made during a meeting held today (October 8) by the Constitutional Council.

Following Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s inauguration as the new President, Priyantha Weerasuriya was appointed as Acting Inspector General of Police on September 27.

Senior DIG Weerasuriya’s appointment was made in accordance with the constitutional powers vested in the President, with the official letter of appointment being presented by the President’s Secretary, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

Notably, Priyantha Weerasuriya is the first officer in the history of the Sri Lanka Police to ascend from the rank of police constable to Inspector General of Police. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, specializing in Human Resource Management.
