Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Election Postponed Indefinitely Amid Voting Dispute

The election to appoint a new Chairman for the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha commenced today (17) under the patronage of Western Provincial Commissioner Sarangika Jayasundara.

During the proceedings, a dispute arose over the method of voting. While one group proposed an open ballot, another group insisted on a secret ballot. Given the submission of both proposals, the authority to decide the voting method fell to the Commissioner.

Exercising her authority, Commissioner Jayasundara announced that the election would be conducted by secret ballot.

However, the situation escalated when 24 members left the chamber in protest against this decision, resulting in a lack of quorum. As a result, the Commissioner temporarily adjourned the meeting for 30 minutes.

Despite the adjournment, the deadlock persisted, prompting the Commissioner to adjourn the session indefinitely.

Consequently, the election to appoint both the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha did not take place and has been postponed indefinitely.
