The election to appoint a new Chairman for the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha commenced today (17), under the patronage of Western Provincial Commissioner Sarangika Jayasundara.
During the proceedings, a dispute arose regarding the voting method for the chairman’s election. One group proposed an open ballot, while the opposing side insisted on a secret ballot.
Given the submission of two conflicting proposals, the authority to determine the method of voting rested with the Commissioner. Exercising this authority, Commissioner Jayasundara decided that the election would proceed by secret ballot.
However, in protest of this decision, 24 members walked out of the chamber, resulting in a lack of quorum. Consequently, the Commissioner adjourned the meeting for 30 minutes.
Despite this temporary adjournment, the situation did not improve. Due to the continued lack of quorum and unrest, the Commissioner later decided to adjourn the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha indefinitely.
As a result, the appointment of both the Chairman and Vice-Chairman was not finalized today and has been postponed until further notice.
