It has been reported that authorities are planning to deviate from the longstanding tradition followed in the election of the Mayor and other key positions of the Colombo Municipal Council, scheduled for Monday (16).
Traditionally, in local government institutions where no party holds a clear majority, positions are determined through a vote. The process typically begins with a decision on whether the vote will be conducted via secret ballot or open ballot.
In recent days, several local government institutions opted for open ballots, through which the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was able to secure control. However, in a notable departure from precedent, sources indicate that the upcoming Colombo Municipal Council elections will be held using a secret ballot, rather than the previously adopted open method—raising concerns over democratic transparency.
Despite public claims from both the ruling party and the opposition asserting majority control in the council, it is understood that neither side currently commands a definitive majority.
Reports suggest that the shift to a secret ballot is a strategic move by authorities to avoid a repeat of recent outcomes, where open ballots favored the opposition. Observers note that this decision may serve to prevent any disadvantage to the Compass faction, as experienced in other local councils.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from opposition groups within Colombo, who have pledged to launch strong protests against what they describe as an undemocratic decision.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has reportedly summoned legal advisors to explore the highest legal recourse available against the officials responsible for this deviation. He is also said to be working to unify all opposition factions in a collective protest effort.
