The Supreme Court has decided to take up five Fundamental Rights applications that challenge the Cabinet of Ministers’ approval for India’s Adani Company to construct a wind power plant in Mannar.

These petitions will be taken up on the 14th of October, to verify the facts.

The Supreme Court bench issued the order comprising justices S. Thurairaja, A. H. M. D Nawaz, Shiran Gunaratne, and Achala Vengappuli.

The petitioners, including the Center For Environmental Justice, argue that Sri Lanka, situated along the ‘Central Asian Flyway,’ plays a crucial role as a global hub for migratory birds.

The petitioner notes that approximately one million birds visit this region during winter.

The petitioners highlight that any obstruction to this area could significantly impact the migratory patterns of these birds.

Furthermore, the petitioners contend that Mannar was chosen for the wind farm project primarily due to political and external factors, without sufficient scientific justification, despite its environmentally sensitive status.
