State Minister Sanath Nishantha has been released by the Court of Appeal with a stern warning after failing to appear in court today over a case related to contempt of court charges.

Earlier today, the court ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately arrest Sanath Nishantha and produce him in court after the State Minister failed to appear in court despite being issued a summons.

Following the issuance of the arrest warrant, the SLPP MP filed a motion and appeared before the Court of Appeal.

The court thereafter released State Minister Sanath Nishantha after a stern warning to appear in court on all dates when his case is taken up for consideration.

Summons were issued to the State Minister to appear before the Court of Appeal today after he was accused of contempt of court charges by several parties in August.

Sanath Nishantha is accused of contempt of court for stating the officers from the Attorney General’s Department and some judges are responsible for letting loose criminals who engaged in the violence in Sri Lanka in May.

“Some judges should take responsibility for this, they give bail for these criminals in one day,” he said, during a press briefing in August.

A petition was thereafter filed at the Court of Appeal by a lawyer accusing State Minister Sanath Nishantha of contempt of court.
