Almost 2 years have passed since the fire of the Express Pearl ship which caused the biggest marine pollution in the country. Over the past period, a team consisting of many academics conducted investigations into the damage caused to the marine environment of this country. Accordingly, that the damage has been estimated at US dollars 6.4 billion, but only a negligible amount has been received as compensation.
Nevertheless, the government has so far failed to take legal action to obtain compensation for this damage. Also, it is reported that only a few more days are left to file a lawsuit to get this compensation. Therefore, it is necessary to speed up legal action against the company that owns the ship Express Pearl, which has caused enormous damage to the marine environment, living things and the fishing community in this country.
Accordingly, considering this as a problem of national importance, opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa asked a special question under 27/2.
