Opposition Leader Advocates for International Cricket Stadium in Jaffna
During a recent visit to Mandathiv in the Velanai Divisional Secretariat area of Jaffna, Opposition Leader Mr Sajith Premadasa announced plans for a new international cricket stadium on 50 acres of allocated land. He emphasized that such a stadium, built through a public-private partnership similar to the Kettarama stadium in Colombo during the tenure of President Ranasinghe Premadasa, would boost tourism and strengthen the local economy in Jaffna district.
Mr Premadasa highlighted that the project aims to develop local sports talent and rejuvenate Jaffna’s economy. He expressed concerns over delays despite requests from the Cricket Board to expand the stadium’s land allocation. Mr. Premadasa assured that the stadium would be implemented responsibly, ensuring minimal environmental impact, and benefitting the Northern Province under the governance of Samagi Jan Balawega.
During his visit, Mr Premadasa also spoke with Acting district secretary Mr Marathalingam Pratipan to inquire about the project’s status and requested a copy of the plan. The event was attended by MP Angajan Ramanathan from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and Ms. Umachandra Pragash, the Northern Province Coordinator of Samagi Janabalawegaya
