The opposition leader said that there is a problem as to how far the speaker of the current Parliament has followed the accepted parliamentary tradition and how he acted in many cases including the appointment of the Inspector General of Police and the bill related to the security of online systems is problematic. At the time of the appointment of the Inspector General of Police, the party abstained from casting 4 votes, 2 against and 2 more votes for the person nominated by the President, and the Speaker considered the 2 votes against as 2 votes against and the current Inspector General of Police was used in an illegal manner. The leader of the opposition said that the speaker had violated the constitution and its provisions.
Mr. Sajith Premadasa said that the Speaker does not even know the meaning of the 3 words Yes, No and Abstain and he does not have a proper understanding of how to vote in the Parliament.
Opposition Leader Mr Sajith Premadasa said this in the debate against the Speaker in Parliament today.
The opposition leader said that even though there are checks and balances between the executive and the legislative judiciary, the speaker has deliberately violated those checks and balances and he is involved in a conspiracy to give sole power to the executive.
