Opposition Leader Sajith Reveals Dangerous Clause in New Tax Bill; Delays in Tax Filing and Registration to Be Criminalized

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has highlighted that the new tax bill being prepared for introduction by the government contains several concerning clauses. Sajith Premadasa made these remarks in a statement to the media.

He emphasized that the public is not opposed to paying taxes, but rather to being treated unfairly within the tax system.

According to him, the proposed Section 185A would criminalize even administrative offences such as late filing of tax returns or delays in registration. This, he warned, could result in small-scale business owners who are struggling to survive being treated in the same manner as individuals who deliberately evade millions in taxes.

He described the situation as fundamentally flawed.

Premadasa further stated that instead of reforming the tax system, modernizing the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), and improving tax compliance facilitation, the government appears to be opting for the easier path of criminalizing ordinary citizens.

He also questioned the government’s priorities, asking that if it has the capacity to pass laws so swiftly, what has happened to stronger anti-corruption legislation and measures targeting financial fraud, money laundering, and the misuse of public property.

He urged authorities to take action against corrupt individuals and impose strict penalties on major financial offenders, while cautioning against using the law as a tool against ordinary citizens.

He added that they will not remain silent when legislation undermines fairness, proportionality, and the constitutional rights of the people.
