Sajith Premadasa Urges Government to Redirect Sri Lanka Day Funds Toward Disaster Relief
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that, at this critical time, relief must be provided to the affected people without engaging in mutual blame. He noted that issues exist within the current relief distribution system, including problems related to providing financial resources to state officials. He emphasized that although billions of rupees are allocated, the public must actually receive the relief intended for them, and that despite any shortcomings, all parties should work together to support the people. Premadasa expressed these views during a visit to assess the situation of those affected by the disaster. During the visit, he inquired into the problems faced by residents in areas including Gothatuwa, Wellampitiya, and Kolonnawa.

He further stated that the government must examine whether it has the necessary experience to handle a situation of this scale and ensure that public officials receive the support they need to deliver relief and essential services. He stressed that the primary focus at this moment should be providing assistance to the affected people, adding that the government has a responsibility to instill confidence in public officials to carry out their duties effectively.

The Opposition Leader also highlighted that approximately Rs. 300 million has been allocated for Sri Lanka Day, and insisted that these funds should instead be directed toward relief efforts. Rather than celebrating for three days, he said the money should be used to support the affected people, provide compensation for loss of life and property, rehabilitate communities once the damage is restored, and ensure the welfare of those impacted by the disaster.
