Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa met with India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, in New Delhi during his official visit to India, where the two held extensive discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing regional cooperation.

The talks centered on advancing the India–Sri Lanka partnership through greater connectivity, increased trade, and deeper economic collaboration. Dr. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s continued support to Sri Lanka, recalling New Delhi’s crucial assistance during the island nation’s economic crisis, and emphasized the importance of using the current period to shape a long-term recovery strategy.

Premadasa outlined Sri Lanka’s roadmap for sustained economic growth and reforms, stressing the importance of achieving debt sustainability as the country prepares to resume full debt servicing in 2028. He noted that regional investment and integration will be key to ensuring stable and inclusive development.

The two leaders also explored opportunities to expand cooperation in energy and infrastructure, including renewable energy and grid connectivity. Dr. Jaishankar expressed readiness to support collaboration opportunities for SJB parliamentarians in these sectors, citing India’s successful regional partnerships with Bhutan and Nepal.

Both sides reviewed ongoing progress in maritime and air connectivity initiatives and discussed the proposed cross-border power grid interconnection. They also exchanged views on regional security dynamics and Sri Lanka’s strategic role in the Indian Ocean.

Premadasa reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to a pragmatic, non-aligned foreign policy that actively engages global partners while safeguarding national sovereignty. Dr. Jaishankar welcomed this stance, underscoring that Sri Lanka’s stability is essential to India’s own security and economic progress.
