Sajith Premadasa Challenges Aswesuma Beneficiary Selection at ‘Budgeting for the Future’ Forum
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa raised serious concerns over the government’s beneficiary selection process for the Aswesuma welfare program during the Budgeting for the Future forum at the Galle Face Hotel.

Speaking at the event, Premadasa criticized the absence of a structured, data-driven methodology in identifying poverty levels. He pointed out that the government had not conducted an official survey to assess household income and expenditure but instead relied on a Learn Asia study, which estimated the national poverty rate at 33%. He questioned why an independent census was not carried out to ensure accurate data collection.

Premadasa further challenged the effectiveness of Aswesuma as a comprehensive poverty alleviation initiative, arguing that it lacks essential components such as savings, investment, and production mechanisms. He urged the government to adopt a more scientific approach to poverty assessment, referencing globally recognized criteria, including daily income thresholds and kilocalorie intake, to ensure a more accurate and fair distribution of welfare benefits.
