Sajith Premadasa Calls for Transparent and Accountable Public Representation to Strengthen Democracy

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa emphasized the importance of conducting public representation in a transparent, efficient, and citizen-centric manner. Speaking at a training program for new Members of Parliament, he highlighted the need to continuously innovate the concept of an open parliament in an era shaped by modern technological advancements. According to him, this approach can significantly enhance the role of public representatives in safeguarding democracy through mechanisms such as posing questions and engaging in policy formulation.

Premadasa underscored the vital role of parliamentary committees in strengthening governance and shaping policies. He urged representatives to approach their responsibilities with maturity, efficiency, and accountability to effectively serve the public interest.

During his address, Premadasa reiterated the foundational pillars of democracy—the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary—emphasizing the critical role of legislators in driving the country’s progress through the legislative system. Citing iconic leaders, he noted that British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once described Parliament as the sacred heart of democracy, bridging the gap between rulers and the ruled. Similarly, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru recognized Parliament as not merely a law-making institution but as a vital protector of the freedoms and rights of the people.

Premadasa also recommended that MPs deepen their understanding of parliamentary responsibilities by studying authoritative texts such as Erskine May: Parliamentary Practice and Kaul and Shakdher’s Practice and Procedure of Parliament. He suggested that copies of these books be provided to all MPs to empower them in strengthening committee functions and enhancing the public representation process.

The Opposition Leader concluded by reaffirming the need for responsibility, accountability, and continuous learning to uphold democratic principles and serve the people effectively.
