Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for bolstering the relationship between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom during his address at the UK-Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Association event, held at the Sri Lankan Parliament.
Speaking to an audience that included distinguished dignitaries such as Honourable Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagat Vikramaditya and UK High Commissioner His Excellency Andrew Patrick, Premadasa highlighted the UK’s significant contributions to Sri Lanka’s development. He expressed deep appreciation for the support extended over the years, particularly through initiatives like the Department for International Development (DFID), which he credited with playing a pivotal role in advancing the nation’s economic and social progress.
Premadasa underscored the importance of the revitalized Parliamentary Friendship Association in fostering closer ties, encouraging legislative collaboration, and enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.
Addressing Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic challenges, Premadasa made a heartfelt appeal to the UK for support in overcoming the nation’s financial difficulties. “We hope this initiative revitalizes the bilateral relationship, fostering closer interactions between our legislatures and enabling Sri Lanka to achieve prosperity, equitable growth, and social justice,” he said.
The Opposition Leader also extended an invitation to British investors, assuring comprehensive facilitation for projects across all regions of Sri Lanka. “We welcome British investors, as well as governmental and non-governmental support, to promote Sri Lanka’s path towards inclusive growth and shared prosperity,” he remarked.
The event reaffirmed the shared commitment of both nations to deepen cooperation, enhance mutual understanding, and strengthen economic ties. It concluded with a vision to work collaboratively towards sustainable development and a prosperous future for both countries.
