The private members motions by Jayantha Katagoda and Sanjeewa Edirimanna are firmly at the beginning of this illegal unconstitutional and anti-democratic process, but the Attorney General said that a 2/3 majority in the parliament and a referendum needed to carry out this process, this private member’s proposal should be considered as an illegal act. The leader of the opposition said that the government is using more tactics to continue this anti-democratic act and the law should be used to defeat that attempt.
Opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa said today (14) that as well as defeating this legally by seeking the help of the courts, we should join together to defeat the death blows and anti-democratic activities that may be inflicted on the electoral system in the future.
The opposition leader said this during a special discussion with opposition party representatives and non-governmental organizations involved in the election process today (14) at the opposition leader’s office.
Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, said that the democratic system should be protected and that it is the responsibility of the president, the prime minister, the government and all parties and opposition parties to carry out the elections which are an important part of it.
Also, when the Samagi Jana Balawegaya went to the court to demand an election, the members of the government tried to bring the judges of the court before the Privileges Committee of the Parliament and they are acting in a way that makes even the Supreme Court and its impartial judges uncomfortable and even the executive is pointing fingers at the court, said the opposition leader. Regardless of the ideologies, all parties and opposition parties should come together to hold an election at this time.
