Amidst public outcry, the Russian Embassy in Colombo has expressed serious concern over a controversial night party originally scheduled for February 24, 2024, in Unawatuna. The event, organized with a “dress code: white,” sparked outrage and was subsequently called off.
The Embassy addressed the situation in a statement, acknowledging unconfirmed reports linking Russian citizens to the event’s organization. However, it clarified that the cancellation stemmed from the unclear entry conditions and resulting public confusion, rather than malicious intent.
Apologizing for any offence caused, the organizers expressed regret, emphasizing their lack of intention to harm or discriminate against anyone. The Embassy reiterated Russia’s staunch opposition to racial discrimination and nationalism, emphasizing its commitment to combatting such injustices.
Against the backdrop of ongoing Special Military Operations in Ukraine aimed at addressing similar issues, the Embassy urged Russian citizens in Sri Lanka to adhere strictly to local laws and customs.
Initially promoted as an ‘Opening White Party’ at a Russian-run cafe in the south, the event faced significant backlash for its discriminatory policies. With a face control policy restricting entry based on skin colour, wealth, style, or demeanour, the party’s cancellation reflects broader concerns regarding inclusivity and respect for diversity in Sri Lanka.
