Colombo – The Principal of Royal College, Colombo, Mr. L.W.K. Silva, has issued a formal apology regarding the inappropriate behavior of several students during the school’s cycle parade yesterday. The incident, which involved actions deemed disrespectful to religion, has sparked concern. He assured that necessary measures will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.

In an official statement, Mr. Silva addressed the matter, stating:

“I am aware of an incident that took place during the Royal College Cycle Parade 2025. A video recording shared with me shows a student of our college engaging in inappropriate behavior by carrying a wooden cross—an important symbol of the Christian faith—without showing due respect.

“I am deeply saddened that this incident took place on ‘Ash Wednesday,’ a significant holy day for Christians.

“First and foremost, I extend my sincere and unconditional apology for this incident. I wish to emphasize that Royal College does not condone such actions, which are entirely against the values upheld by our institution as a multi-faith school.

“Considering the gravity of the matter, the college will take the necessary steps to prevent such incidents from recurring. A full investigation will be conducted to address the situation appropriately.”

The incident, which occurred during the 2025 Royal College Cycle Parade, involved reports of a wooden cross—a sacred symbol in Christianity—being misused inappropriately. The school administration has pledged to take corrective action to uphold the principles of respect and inclusivity.
