Sri Lanka’s opposition leader Sajith Premadasa on Saturday voiced concern over the rapidly deteriorating situation in Iran following fresh military developments, calling on the government to act swiftly to safeguard Sri Lankans in the region.
In a public statement, Premadasa said the safety of Sri Lankan nationals must be the government’s “highest priority” amid growing uncertainty, urging authorities to activate “all necessary diplomatic, logistical, and emergency measures” without delay to ensure their protection.
His comments followed reports from Reuters that Israel said it launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran, raising fears of a renewed military confrontation in the Middle East and further weakening prospects for a diplomatic solution to Tehran’s long-running nuclear dispute with Western countries.
Sajith Premadasa emphasized the need for immediate coordination and contingency planning to support Sri Lankans who may be affected by the escalating situation.
