A retired General Manager of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board was arrested yesterday (12) by the Bribery Commission on corruption charges.
According to the allegations, the suspect caused a loss to the government by renting a Prado jeep using funds allocated for the Kandy North Pathadumbara Integrated Water Supply Project implemented by the Board. This was done while two government vehicles were already being used for the Chairman’s official purposes. It is further alleged that a sum of Rs. 12,750,000 was paid as rent without verifying the purpose for which the vehicle was used.
The suspect has also been charged with corruption and conspiracy to commit the offence of obtaining an undue advantage from the supplier. The charges state that payments were made to the supplier without properly accepting the vehicle and by disregarding procurement regulations in order to procure the vehicle from a private institution.
Accordingly, the former General Manager was arrested by the Bribery Commission on the aforementioned charges.
Upon being produced before court, the suspect was ordered to be remanded until the 20th.`
