A group of party leaders and representatives representing the opposition, led by opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa, met Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday morning at the office of the Speaker of the Parliament, based on several special issues including the holding of local government elections and the allocation of related funds.

There, Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the opposition leader, asked the speaker to pass a resolution in the parliament to release the money earmarked for holding the elections in the 2023 budget to hold the local government elections.

But there, the representatives of the ruling party have pointed out that in order to pass such a proposal, the committee has to go through a number of stages, and such a proposal cannot be suddenly presented to the Parliament.

In response, the opposition leader has emphasized that the opposition is ready to bring the proposal following the proper procedure, and that it will be presented in the 3rd week of March.

Accordingly, the Speaker has taken steps to express his agreement.
