A special initiative to sell red rice at the government-controlled price took place today, spearheaded by the Ambalangoda Trade Association.
Under this program, each individual was eligible to purchase up to 5 kilograms of rice at the regulated price of Rs. 220 per kilogram.
Despite long queues forming from early morning, many customers were left empty-handed due to the limited stock available.
The Southern Province, where red rice is in high demand, continues to face a significant shortage of this staple. Concerns have also been raised about certain retailers selling red rice at prices above the government-mandated rate, further exacerbating the issue.
Adding to the challenges, some consumers are hesitant to consume red rice imported from India, citing preferences for locally sourced varieties.
