Due to the ongoing severe weather, red notices warning of potential landslides have been issued in several areas across three districts in Sri Lanka.

Speaking at a media briefing held this morning (27), Police Media Spokesperson, Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa, urged residents in the affected regions to evacuate immediately for their safety.

“The Central Highlands are currently experiencing heavy rainfall, with forecasts indicating further rain on the eastern and western slopes. Red alerts have been issued for evacuation in the following areas of the Kandy District: Harispattuwa, Medadumbara, Gangawatakorala, Ududumbara, Doluwa, Yatinuwara, Udapalatha, Pathahewaheta, Delthota, and Pathadumbara. Landslides have been reported or are likely to occur in these areas,” he said.

Additionally, warnings have been issued for Wilgamuwa, Ambagamuwa, Ambagamuwa Korale, Ratthota, Naula, and Ukuwela in the Matale District, as well as Walapane in the Nuwara Eliya District. The spokesperson reiterated the importance of evacuating these areas without delay.

Public Safety Advisory

The Police Media Spokesperson appealed to the public to exercise extreme caution during this period.

  • Avoid traveling on roads that are flooded or submerged.
  • Do not attempt to retrieve items swept away by floodwaters, as this poses a significant risk to life.
  • Refrain from playing in or wading through floodwaters, and ensure that children are kept safe.
  • If homes are affected by landslides or floods, relocate to designated safe camps.

“We are taking measures to ensure the safety of evacuated homes, including surveillance with drone cameras to deter theft or vandalism,” Thalduwa assured. “However, the priority must be your safety. Please heed the red notices issued for the Central Highlands and vacate areas identified as dangerous. The ground in these regions is heavily saturated, increasing the risk of landslides. Drivers should also avoid stopping vehicles on slopes, and bus operators must exercise caution when overtaking on these roads.”

Emergency Support for Tamil-Speaking Communities

The police have introduced a dedicated hotline, 107, for Tamil-speaking individuals to report weather-related emergencies or seek assistance.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are working to ensure the safety and security of affected communities. Residents are urged to stay updated on official announcements and take all necessary precautions.
