Weekly Aruna newspaper has reported that Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe has taken steps to invite Mr. Karu Jayasuriya and Mr. Victor Ivan to the cabinet meeting held last week.

The newspaper points out that Karu Jayasuriya and Victor Ivan have been entrusted with the establishment of Jana Sabha proposed by the President.

Accordingly, the newspaper has reported that the two have taken steps to inform the Cabinet about the Janasabha before the Cabinet meeting.

On the 9th, we reported the news that the President has planned to establish the People’s Councils.

It is reported that President Ranil Wickramasinghe has planned to amend the Local Government Elections Act as the local government elections are scheduled to be held before March next year.

Accordingly, the President has planned to transfer the executive powers that have been held by a single person to a committee that also includes the chairman.

Also, it is reported that the President has planned to reduce the number of members of the local government institutions from 8000 to 4000 and to establish public assemblies.

However, political analysts point out that it seems that the leaders of the government are preparing to postpone the local government elections through this.

The Election Commission has also indicated that under the current situation, the local government elections should be held and completed before next March.

Although the local government elections were supposed to be held last February, former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa decided to postpone it for another year.

There is no possibility of postponing it once again due to a given court decision.

Also, the Samagi Jana Balawega had met the Chairman of the Election Commission a few weeks ago and had taken steps to hand over a letter asking him to hold the election immediately.
