Member of Parliament Harshana Rajakaruna said as follows while participating in the press conference held at the office of the Leader of the Opposition.
Mr. Harshana Rajakaruna who commented further said:
The increase in the living burden of the people has been mainly influenced by the increase in the fuel price, the increase in the electricity bill and the increase in the water bill. Along with these increases, the prices of the country’s essential goods and services also increase.
The government has increased the electricity bill by 300 percent and reduced the electricity bill by a very low percentage of 20 percent. In the 70s and 80s, the people of the country who were happy to get electricity for their homes became unable to pay their electricity bills. Instead of moving towards the modern world, the country has gone back to the age of carts.
People hoped that the electricity bill would be reduced. When the government increases the electricity bill, it increases by large percentages. But when it is reduced, the electricity bill is reduced by a very low percentage. At present, more than 6 lakh houses have been cut off because they are unable to pay the high electricity bill. Unable to pay the electricity bill, people outside the villages are in the dark today. Electricity is not a luxury service. Electricity is a common thing. It was in the 70s and 80s that electricity became a luxury service. Electricity is a must to live a normal life in the country. The government is taking the people back to the 70s and 80s. Providing electricity to the people is an essential service of the Ceylon Electricity Board and the government. When the Ceylon Electricity Board incurs losses, it cannot be approached to cover the losses indirectly. The government is preparing to privatize profit-making institutions. For-profit institutions are privatized to benefit government cronies. All these things do not happen by any means.
Also, majority of the common people of the country use diesel and 92 octane petrol for their vehicles. But the government has not taken steps to revise the price of diesel and 92 octane petrol.
The Supreme Court has given a decision as to who the people were who were responsible for bankrupting the country. Today, the country is in a position to celebrate those economic killers. Ministers of Parliament have gone to the airport to receive Basil Rajapaksa, who was named as a convict by the Supreme Court. It was Basil Rajapaksa who ran away from the country in 2015 after displeasing all the party members. President Ranil Wickremesinghe crossed the Rajapakse family from the vine bridge. Basil Rajapaksa is one person who crossed that. They say that he has come to build the country. People are no longer fooled by such things. The main reason for bringing a no-confidence motion against the speaker was the anti-democratic behavior of the speaker. The opposition brought a motion of no confidence against the speaker because of the speaker’s behavior regarding the online bill and the speaker’s bias in the parliament. Also, rather than the speaker acting independently in the parliament, the speaker acted as the main representative of the government in the parliament. A public representative should not be biased. He should work for the country. In order to protect democracy, the government is invited to support the motion of no confidence brought against the Speaker.”
It is not appropriate to misuse the independence given to the central bank
“Due to the orders of the Central Bank, the people of the country have to pay a heavy queue and a heavy tax today. It is very unfair for central bank officials to increase their salaries by 80 percent in such a situation. We believe that the central bank should have independence. We have no objection to giving special consideration to Central Bank officials who should have special skills. But at a time when the country is under severe economic pressure, it is a matter of surprise that the Central Bank officials have increased their salaries unfairly. It is not appropriate to misuse the independence given to the central bank.”
