The government has reportedly intensified its actions against members of the Rajapaksa family.
The first indication of this emerged last week when a court imposed a travel ban on former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and two other former military officers. The order was reportedly based on statements made by former Director of State Intelligence Suresh Salley, who is currently under arrest in connection with investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks.
According to political sources, the travel ban imposed on Gotabaya Rajapaksa caused significant concern among senior members of the Rajapaksa family. It is reported that during a discussion held last week among influential members of the family, the travel restriction was viewed as a serious warning sign. During the discussion, concerns were reportedly raised that preparations could be underway to arrest the former President within the coming days.
The travel ban was imposed at a time when warrants had also been issued by two courts against Basil Rajapaksa, another prominent member of the Rajapaksa family. As a result, Basil Rajapaksa is now facing a court order for his arrest.
However, as Basil Rajapaksa is currently residing in Los Angeles, United States, it is reported that the government is holding confidential discussions regarding the possibility of obtaining an international Red Notice for his arrest. If such efforts are successful, authorities are expected to pursue his arrest in the United States and facilitate his return to Sri Lanka through international legal procedures.
Is Chamal Rajapaksa Also Facing Arrest?
Meanwhile, another topic generating discussion within political circles is the possibility of legal action being taken against Chamal Rajapaksa, the senior-most member of the Rajapaksa family.
Several allegations have already been filed against Chamal Rajapaksa, and he has reportedly been questioned on multiple occasions by the relevant authorities. During a meeting of lawyers representing members of the Rajapaksa family held last week, it was reportedly emphasized that several family members could face arrest in the near future.
Accordingly, it is understood that extensive discussions have taken place within the Rajapaksa camp regarding possible responses to such developments and the legal assistance that may be sought.
